On Monday, we’ll learn the full details of the Senate Republicans’ plan for the next economic rescue package. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said it will include a second stimulus check.
We also know that Senate and White House leaders are looking to follow the $1,200 stimulus check guideline. that the CARES Act set out when it became law in March. Once Senate Republicans present a proposal, named CARES 2, they’ll begin hashing out details of the final bill with House Democrats
“Republicans want to send a second round of direct payments to American households,” McConnell said
Details that are still up for debate include who will qualify for the second stimulus payments and how much money each person could receive in the next round. The Democrat-led House has its own second stimulus proposal called the Heroes Act.
During negotiations over the next few weeks, the two sides are expected to come together on the size of a second check, which will depend in part on the total value of the rescue package. According to CBS News, the Senate is considering an identical payment structure to the CARES Act.
The president has, over the past several weeks, come out as a firm advocate of a second round of direct payment to Americans. “I support actually larger numbers than the Democrats,” President Donald Trump said on July 1st.
