Ashton Calder scored the go-ahead goal with 6 minutes and 19 seconds remaining in the second period to make it 2-1 and the Lake Superior State defense made that score hold up for the win against host Adrian College in a close contest in men’s hockey action on Sunday afternoon.
Junior Rex Moe scored Adrian’s lone goal in the second period. Senior goalie Cameron Gray had 20 saves. Junior Zach Goberis led all skaters with 13 face-off wins and 20 attempts. Sophomore Alessio Luciani and freshman Chase Spencer also got on the scoresheet with an assist apiece.
Lukas Kaelble and Calder both had a goal and an assist to pace the Lakers offense. Mareks Mitens (W, 2-0-1) played the first two periods to get credit for the win, making 15 saves. Dustin Manz won 12 of 16 face-offs. Freshman goaltender Ethan Langenegger made his collegiate debut playing the final 20 minutes while stopping all five shots he faced.
Adrian falls to 1-4 all-time versus NCAA D-I competition. The Bulldogs doubled up Alabama-Huntsville on the road, 4-2 on Jan. 4, 2013, in their first-ever meeting against such an opponent. All four of the Bulldogs’ losses this season have come against Division I teams affiliated with the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, which has produced 38 National Champions. Lake Superior won NCAA titles in 1988, 1992 and 1994.
