WATCH: Christopher Columbus Statue Torn Down and Tossed in Harbor

Hard News Videos

A statue of Christopher Columbus in Baltimore was removed and thrown into the harbor. The monument was near a Little Italy neighborhood, where it had stood for 36 years.

The statue was dedicated by former mayor William Donald Schaefer and former president Ronald Reagan. On Saturday night on the Fourth of July, protesters threw ropes around the statue and used them to pull it off its pedestal.

Columbus is often credited with discovering North America. Protestors say he was responsible for the exploitation and genocide of native populations in the United States. The controversy means his statues have become a target.

One Columbus statue in Boston was beheaded last month. Another in Richmond, Virginia was torn down as well. Protesters have started toppling monuments deemed to be a symbol of racism. Columbus is just one of those figures targeted.
