Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett has been suspended without pay indefinitely by the NFL after striking Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph with his own helmet during the final stages of Thursday Night Football. The league also announced he was done for the rest of the year at a minimum.
Two other players also have been suspended without pay for their role in the fight. Pittsburgh’s Maurkice Pouncey (suspended for three games) and Cleveland’s Larry Ogunjobi (suspended for one game). Garrett’s minimum suspension puts him out for six regular season games and any playoff games this year. It’s one of the longest suspensions for on-field incidents in National Football League history.
Both front offices of the teams have also been fined $250,000 each.
This is a horrifying reaction by Garrett. You just cannot take it this far. It’s sad and frustrating to see this happen on field in a time when people are working to actively ruin sports like football and hockey. This is fuel for their fire.
Garret has never seemed to have any significant problems. Not anything that has been publicized nationally like this obviously. It’s likely we may never know what caused him to be set off in such a way, but it’s best not to speculate about the exact reasoning and just handle the actions.
Below is how things transpired on TNF.
Rudolph had thrown a short pass to running back Trey Edmunds when Garrett rushed him and threw him down on the ground.

The two then began to get into a scuffle on the ground when Steelers offensive linemen Matt Feiler and David DeCastro tried to break it up.
Rudolph’s hand appears to either be stuck, or he is trying to remove Garrett’s helmet. It’s unclear which.

Garrett then rips Rudolph’s helmet off his head and brutally strikes the quarterback with it. Rudolph then looks around for referees with his arms up. Maurkice Pouncy gets involved and starts to punch Garrett in the helmet.
Here's the most complete clip I could find. It's originally from Conor Powers. More tweets and angles on my TL

On the side of Garrett and Pouncey’s scuffle, Browns defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi comes in from seemingly out of nowhere and pushes Rudolph down to the ground.

Garrett, Pouncy and Ogunjobi were ejected from the game. Cleveland ended up with a 21-7 win in the contest between AFC North rivals.
After the game, Garrett told ESPN he lost his composure and he said he regretted his actions. “I lost my cool and I regret it,” Garrett said. “It’s going to come back to hurt our team. The guys who jumped into the scrum, I appreciate my team having my back, but it never should have gotten to that point.”
Browns coach Freddie Kitchens said Garrett apologized to him after the melee.
How long should Cleveland #Browns DE Myles Garrett be suspended for in response to last night's incident?

“I thought it was pretty cowardly and bush league,” Mason Rudolph said during a press conference. “I’m not going to back down from any bully. I felt like I had a bone to pick with him. I appreciate the line always having my back, but I was angry.”
This wasn’t the only incident last night. Check out this hit as well:
