Urbana University, a branch campus of Franklin University, has announced that the school is “impossible to sustain” and will be shutting down. The closure will be taking place after the spring 2020 semester ends.
There are more than 1,250 students registered at Urbana. Franklin University’s efforts to stabilize the campus have met with some success in recent years. However, the global coronavirus pandemic has added a level of stress and uncertainty to Urbana. This has compelled Franklin University to discontinue physical operations on the branch campus.
The Blue Knights of Urbana were an institution for over 170 years.
“Our highest priority is to ensure students experience a seamless transition of their academic studies and that our branch campus employees have the resources to make their transition as well,” said Dr. David Decker, president of Franklin University
Urbana was regionally well known for education and teacher preparation programs. The school Urbana was founded in 1850 and acquired by Franklin in 2014.
Urbana’s 128-acre, residential campus nestled in heart of Ohio provided a background for students actively engaged in campus activities through 20 student-led academic, professional, performing arts, social and service organizations.
“As institutions of higher education across the country struggle to identify ways to stay open, we will do all we can to help students identify the best alternative forward to fulfill their education goals in an affordable manner,” said Dr. Decker
Blue Knights athletics included 17 NCAA Division II sports and three intercollegiate club sports. Franklin University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission.
