Ohio High School Football; Interesting COVID-19 Changes

High School Sports

There have been a number of changes to OHSAA rules due to COVID-19, and these are just a few examples. Things have changed the most for officials. Officials now come dressed to the game and are encouraged to have hand sanitizer and masks. The OHSAA does not force officials to wear masks. Those wearing masks are likely to have an electronic whistle.

Officials will not shake hands with anybody and are not encouraged to go into any locker room. They are not to touch the footballs unless it’s a measurement, following which they should promptly use hand sanitizer. Not touching the ball makes spotting and relaying the ball tricky. To spot the ball, the U will have an orange bean bag set down at the spot. The center, who has taken the ball with him to the huddle, will place the ball down at the bean bag.

To relay the ball, players or ball boys will do that. On kickoffs, the kicker will take a ball from the sidelines. Coaches, Players and game personnel (i.e., chain gang) who are on the sidelines are required to wear masks. Spectators are limited to family and the home band.
