Mike “Doc” Emrick, the voice of the NHL, announced Monday morning that he will retire. The announcement came via NBC Sports and ends one of the greatest sports media careers in modern history.
74-year-old Emrick started out calling college and minor league hockey radio broadcasts. “I hope I can handle retirement OK,” he said.
“Especially since I’ve never done it before. But I’ve just been extremely lucky for 50 years. NBC has been so good to me, especially since the pandemic, when I was allowed to work from home in a studio NBC created.”
Emrick was born in Indiana. He earned his Ph.D and nickname in broadcasting while at Bowling Green. He and his wife, Joyce, as well as their dogs and horses live in Michigan.
Emrick is in seven halls of fame.
