Community Rallies to Support LaFayette Teen in Cancer Fight

Hard News

LAFAYETTE, Ga. (SESN) — The Hylton family is in need of community support after their 17-year-old son, Justin, was diagnosed with a rare germ cell tumor. After months of symptoms, the family finally received an answer when a large mass was discovered in Justin’s chest. He is currently undergoing chemotherapy to shrink the tumor, which has severely impacted his lung and esophagus.

Despite the challenging treatment and its risks, Justin has remained resilient. The family recently relocated to Georgia to start a new chapter in their lives, but Justin’s health issues have come on suddenly. His parents have taken time away from work to focus on his care and are grateful for the outpouring of support.

The family recently received news that surgery will take place next month, though doctors have warned of the significant risks involved. Due to the size and location of the tumor, traditional sedation methods are not possible because Justin’s trachea has been moved out of place. The surgery to remove what remains of the tumor is expected to be extremely dangerous.

Despite these challenges, Justin’s spirits remain high. “He’s bugging us to go to a Rambler game now that he’s out of the hospital between chemo rounds,” said Amanda Hylton, his mother. “But with his immune system compromised, we’re not sure how to make it happen safely.” Justin has been advised to avoid crowds to reduce the risk of illness.

“We’ve been overwhelmed by the kindness from friends, family, and even strangers. It’s been a challenging time, but we’re hopeful and staying strong,” said Amanda Hylton, Justin’s mother.

A GoFundMe has been organized to help cover medical expenses and support the family as they navigate Justin’s treatment. The community’s generosity, in the form of donations and well-wishes, has already made a significant difference.
