Adrian College Rides Solid Goaltending and Balanced Offense Past CUW Falcons

Adrian College scored in every period to earn a 3-2 non-conference win over visiting Concordia Wisconsin in men’s hockey action on Tuesday evening. Junior Trevor Coykendall, who tallied a goal, led Adrian from the face-off dot with 15-for-23. Sophomore Nick Lund led all skaters with a career-best seven shots on goal and he had an assist. Junior Andrew Bellant and freshman Connor May also scored for the Bulldogs.

Michael Fradette and Cory Dennis scored for the visitors. Bo Didur made 53 stops to keep the Falcons in the game. In the face-off circle, Michael Makarenko (13-for-22) and Alex Way (13-for-26) led the way.

The Bulldogs extended their lead to 2-0 with 48 seconds left in the second period when May crashed the net and scored his team-leading fifth goal off a scrum. Junior Zach Goberis and freshman Chase Spencer had the assists on the play.

Coykendall pounced on junior Grant Baetsen’s shot from the left face-off circle for the rebound goal at the top of the crease to put Adrian on the scoreboard at the 8:22 mark in the first period.

CUW scored a pair of goals in the third period to pull within 3-2. At 6:59, Fradette got the Falcons on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal and made the score 2-1. With an extra attacker, CUW scored its second goal with just 29 seconds left off the stick of Dennis.

Bellant scored an insurance goal with 64 seconds left to give Adrian a two-goal cushion, 3-1. Junior Rex Moe and sophomore Terry Ryder were credited with the assists, as Bellant circled from behind the net to the left circle where we wristed a shot over Didur’s right shoulder inside the left post.

Adrian dominated shots on goal, 56 to 31. The Bulldogs nearly doubled up the Falcons in the first period (19-10) and third (16-8). Stewart made a huge pad save with 1 second left in regulation on Nick Guiney’s slap shot from the left face-off circle to preserve the win.

The Bulldogs extend their dominance over the Falcons with a 44-0 all-time series lead. Adrian is 22-0 at home Adrian owns a 17-game winning streak against NCAA Division III opponents dating back to last season. Nine different Bulldogs registered a goal or an assist.

May has taken over sole possession of first place of the Bulldogs’ scoring lead with 10 points on five goals and five assists. All four losses this season for the Bulldogs have come against Division I programs. Adrian’s 56 shots tonight are a season high and the most in a game since unleashing 59 versus visiting Finlandia (7-0) on Nov. 15, 2019.

Adrian will host the USA Hockey National Team Development Program U-18 squad for the second time this season on Thursday. The teams’ third exhibition meeting overall in 2020-21 is scheduled for an opening puckdrop of 7:05 p.m. in Arrington Ice Arena.
