Junior transfer Zach Goberis broke a 2-all tie in the third period to lift the white team to a 3-2 victory over the Black in the annual Adrian College men’s hockey intrasquad contest at the Arrington Ice Arena on Saturday afternoon. Senior Rex Moe scored the only goal in the five-minute extra session to give Black the win.

Sophomore Alessio Luciani, playing for the black team, led all scorers with a goal and an assist.

The black team struck first when sophomore Nick Lund corralled a slap shot that went wide in his defense zone and he started the breakout, connecting on a pass to Luciani at center ice. In the offensive zone, Lund got the pass back from Luciani and he wristed a shot into the back of the net from between the circles just 1 minute and 41 seconds after the opening face-off.

Freshman John Kaljian equalized about seven minutes later when he took a feed from classmate Dawson Ellis and skated into the zone where he wristed a shot from the left-face dot. Freshman Jacob Breckles also got credit for an assist.

Like the first period, the teams traded goals in the second. Luciani stole the puck from a defenseman at his defensive blue line and skated up the ice the other way on a breakaway, beating the goalie at the top of the crease just 44 seconds in. White tied it 2-2 on a goal by junior Andrew Bellant at the 8:55 mark. Freshman Connor May and sophomore Terry Ryder were credited with the assists.

In the third period, Gobreis–who played his first two seasons for the American Collegiate Hockey Association Division 2 program at Metro State in Denver, Colo.–got the game-winner with 3:45 left in regulation. A back-pass to the Black offensive blueline jumped over the defenseman’s stick, as Gobreis picked up the loose puck and he got between two defenders before he scored on a back-hander from the top of the goal crease.

Freshman Dershahn Stewart made 18 saves in 22:55 of action to get the win. Sophomore Nic Tallarico played for both teams, making 13 saves in 24 minutes. Senior Cameron Gray had 15 saves in 24 minutes for the black side.

In the extra session, Moe scored just 17 seconds in on assists from freshman Emil Gabrielson and senior Joshua Owings.

The white team held a 30-24 advantage in shots on goal.

The format of this scrimmage called for three 12-minute periods and then a five-minute “overtime” of 3-on-3 play regardless of score during regulation. If the extra period had been tied, then a shootout would have implemented.
