The Washington football team has officially retired their mascot as of Monday. What the Washington team did not do was unveil their new logo and team name.
Fans and journalists were at first confused, but now we believe we know why. Philip M. McAuley, a realtor in Alexandria, Virginia, trademarked over a dozen potential new mascots for the franchise.
Washington and fans had identified a number of ideas that could potentially be used in a rebrand. Many of the most popular have reportedly been federally trademarked by the realtor.
The names trademarked include popular choices like the “Redials” and Red Wolves.” Other candidates for the rebrand that have been trademarked include “War Hogs, “Tribe” and “Radskins.”
Why don't the Redskins have a new nickname planned yet? Probably because some realtor in Alexandria beat them to the punch and trademarked every single possible new Redskins nickname. Well, played sir. pic.twitter.com/0an4apXaZy
