2020 NWHL Draft: Rounds 1 and 2, Info on 3-5

Rounds one and two of the 2020 National Women’s Hockey League Draft are complete, and rounds three, four and five will be shared live on Twitter tonight beginning at 7pm EST. Boston University star forward Sammy Davis was the first selection of twelve when the opening two rounds of the 2020 NWHL Entry Draft were unveiled on Tuesday night.

Earlier in the day, Pride general manager Karilyn Pilch executed a trade with Toronto to move from the sixth position to the first overall pick, with the intent of drafting Davis, who scored 42 goals over the last two seasons with BU.

“I’m really excited to be selected first overall by the Pride and to be able to play in my favorite city next season,” said Davis

The new expansion team in Toronto, which was introduced this week, seemed to be getting a lot of love on social media throughout the course of the draft. In fact, the whole league did. It was a good night for the NWHL.

“We hope everyone joins us on Tuesday and Wednesday as we announce the drafting of 30 players and celebrate their achievements and their college programs,” said NWHL Deputy Commissioner Michelle Picard. “We know that many of these players will have important roles on their NWHL teams in the upcoming season, and we look forward to the launch of their professional hockey careers.”

Order of NWHL Draft Selection:

Boston, pick no. 1: Sammy Davis

Connecticut, pick no. 2: Kayla Friesen

Buffalo, pick no. 3: Carly Jackson

Metropolitan, pick no. 4: Saroya Tinker

Minnesota, pick no. 5: Alex Woken

Toronto, pick no. 6: Jaycee Gebhard

Connecticut, pick no. 7: Victoria Howran

Toronto, pick no. 8: Amy Curlew

Buffalo, pick no. 9: Codie Cross

Metropolitan, pick no. 10: Delaney Belinskas

Minnesota, pick no. 11: Patti Marshall

Boston, pick no. 12: Tereza Vanisova

In addition to the 12 selections listed above, another three rounds of selections will be made Wednesday night beginning at 7pm. You can follow along live on Twitter via the NWHL official account.

The order of Wednesday’s selections can be found below. Tonight the Connecticut Whale will be the first to pick in round three. They’ll be followed by the Buffalo Beauts, Toronto, Metropolitan Riveters, Minnesota Whitecaps, and the Boston Pride.

Tereza Vanisova leads the Maine Women’s Ice Hockey program in all-time total points with 129. She also leads the program in all-time assists with 66. She is second all-time with 63 goals.

Maine also saw Carly Jackson become the highest NWHL draft pick in school history. She is their all-time leader in Wins (45), Saves (3,029), Save% (.923), GAA (2.15) and Shutouts (10).

Round 5: Connecticut, Buffalo, Connecticut, Minnesota, Toronto, Boston

Established in 2015, the NWHL was the first professional women’s hockey league in North America to pay its players. The mission of the league is to fuel the continued growth of the sport and brand of pro women’s hockey. The league is made up of the Boston Pride, Buffalo Beauts, Connecticut Whale, Metropolitan Riveters, Minnesota Whitecaps, and a new team in Toronto set to debut in the league’s sixth season.
