College Football College Sports

PIKEVILLE, Kentucky (MWSN) — As the University of Pikeville Bears gear up for the 2024 football season, excitement is in the air. After a record-breaking 2023 season, the Bears are focused on building on their success and aiming for new heights in the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC).

Quarterback Lee Kirkland is set to lead the offense once again. Kirkland, who shattered multiple school records last season, including single-season passing yards (2,741) and touchdown passes (31), returns for his Covid year. With Kirkland at the helm, the Bears’ passing game promises to be a major threat to any defense.

Sophomore receiver Derrick Griffith II, who broke his own single-season receiving yardage record with 811 yards in 2023, will be Kirkland’s primary target. Griffith’s consistency and big-play ability will be crucial for the Bears’ offense.

Kicker Jakob Headley, who holds the school records for extra points made (104) and attempted (118), also returns. His reliable leg will be key in close games.

The Bears have recruited a strong class of newcomers who are eager to make an impact. With a mix of freshmen and transfers, the team is adding depth and competition at key positions. Fans can expect to see some fresh faces contributing on both sides of the ball.
