“Absolute chaos,” wrote one reporter. Fires burned and looters struck during protests over the death of a man in police custody rocked a Minneapolis, Minnesota neighborhood. The Associated Press reported that damage stretches for miles across the city.

Amid the violence, a man was found fatally shot near a pawn shop. Mayor Jacob Frey has requested that the governor to activate the National Guard.

Protesters began gathering in the early afternoon Wednesday near the city’s 3rd Precinct station. 46-year-old George Floyd died on Memorial Day after an officer knelt on his neck until he became unresponsive.

On Thursday morning, smoke hung over Minneapolis and looters carried merchandise from a damaged Target store. Protests have spread to other US cities as well. In California, hundreds protested Floyd’s death by blocking a Los Angeles freeway and attacking California Highway Patrol cruisers.

A bystander’s cellphone video showed an officer kneeling on Floyd ‘s neck for almost eight minutes as he eventually became unresponsive. Police told the Daily Star that they were seeking to arrest him after leaving a Minneapolis grocery store. The store phone police, saying he had used a counterfeit bill.

President Trump tweeted Wednesday evening that he’s asked federal investigators to expedite an investigation into the death in police custody of George Floyd. The officer and three others were fired Tuesday.

On Wednesday night, officers responding to a reported stabbing near the protests found a man lying on the sidewalk with what turned out to be a bullet wound. The man was pronounced dead at a local hospital. A suspect is in custody but the facts leading up to the shooting were “still being sorted out,” according to the Associated Press.
