The New England Patriots were questioned by fans after passing on selecting a quarterback during the 2020 NFL Draft. As the Patriots move on from 20 years of Tom Brady, they have made another quarterback move in the signing of undrafted free agent Brian Lewerke out of Michigan State.
23-year-old Lewerke was a three-year starter for the Spartans. As a senior in 2019, he threw for 3,079 yards, 17 passing touchdowns and 13 interceptions.
57.7% Completion Rate | 8,293 Passing Yards | 47 Passing Touchdowns
He becomes the latest addition to the Patriots’ puzzle in the wake of Brady signing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Bill Belichick said after the draft came to a conclusion that the team not picking a quarterback “wasn’t by design.”
Jarrett Stidham, a fourth-round pick from last year’s NFL Draft, at this moment appears to have the best chance at taking over for New England. The Patriots also brought back veteran Brian Hoyer as a potential aid for Stidham’s development.
