Former New Orleans Saints kicker, Tom Dempsey, has passed away due to complications caused by COVID-19. He was 73-years-old. Dempsey was best known for holding the record of the longest field goal kick in NFL history, and he did it with half of a foot.
Dempsey’s incredible accomplishment helped NOLA to best the Detroit Lions 19-17 on the last play of the game at Tulane Stadium on November 8th of 1970. The kick then stood as the NFL record for more than four decades. It beat the previous record by a full seven yards.
He was born without fingers on his right hand or toes on his right foot. He wore a small, flat shoe on his kicking foot that is now on display at the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
