Freshman Connor May scored on the power-play in the second period for the go-ahead goal as Adrian scored three times in the second period to cruise to a 5-1 non-conference victory at Trine on Saturday evening.

Juniors Grant Baetsen, Sam Ruffin and freshman Ryan Butler were each credited with a goal and an assist. Sophomore goalie Nic Tallarico (1-0) stopped 18 of 19 shots he faced to pick up his fourth career win. Classmate Alessio Luciani, who had an assist, won 15 of 23 face-offs. Ruffin was even better at 12-for-16.

Brendan Prappas scored the Thunder’s lone goal and he was 9-for-18 on face-offs. Freshman Shane Brancato (L, 0-1) made 31 saves in his collegiate debut in the Trine goal. Garrett Hallford was 10-for-20 in the face-off dot. Jared Bowman led Trine with four shots on goal.

With the game tied 1-1 in the second period, Adrian took the lead for good on the man-advantage with 6 minutes and 1 second in when May took a feed from Ruffin to deposit his third goal already of the young season. Junior Andrew Bellant also got an assist on the play.

Junior Rex Moe made it 3-1 3:35 later and Ruffin got an insurance tally for a three-goal cushion with about 5 minutes left in the middle stanza.

Butler notched his first collegiate goal for Adrian at the 2:20 mark of the final period to round out the scoring. Adrian dominated the face-off circle by winning 40 of 69 draws.

The Bulldogs also peppered the Trine goal with 36 shots and holding the Thunder to 19. In the decisive second period when AC struck three times, Adrian outshot them 12-6.

The teams traded goals in the opening period as Baetsen gave the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead at 7:00 with assists to junior Trevor Coykendall and Butler, while Prappas tied it 6:15 later on assists from Jared Domin and TJ Delaney.

Tonight’s matchup of Northern Collegiate Hockey Association members was a non-conference game. Adrian moves to 11-0 lifetime versus Trine, including 5-0 on Thunder home-ice.  May leads the Bulldogs in goals (3) and point-scoring (4).

Bulldog newcomers have accounted for 40.6 percent of the points (13 of 32) and 54.5 percent of the goals (6 of 11) so far. Seventh-year head coach Adam Krug ’12 is now 5-2 in road openers with the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs own a 15-game winning streak dating to last season, which is tied for the second-longest current string in NCAA Division III with Endicott and behind Utica (20 wins in a row).

Adrian is scheduled to play at Division I foe Bowling Green on Friday at 7:07pm.
